2007 Election of New Directors

The following IFPTA members were elected to serve on the IFPTA’s Board of Directors.

Elections for the Board of Directors are held every two years, in conjunction with the biennial PPI Transport Symposium. Directors serve a two-year term and can be re-elected to serve one additional term.

Jim Allan and Magnus Svensson were re-elected to their second term as a Director. John Swingler, George Hudson and Aernaut Maijer were elected to their first term as a Director.

Jim Allan, Managing Director

In addition to his duties as a director of IFPTA, Jim Allan is the Managing Director for Trealmont Chartering & Logistics. He also serves as Director of Trealmont Transport, where he is responsible for operations, charter-ing and logistics.

Jim joined Montreal Shipping in 1975 and helped open its offices in Saint John, NB. In 1980, he transferred to Montreal where he began providing logistics services to the forest products sector. He currently resides in Vancouver, BC.

He has been a member of IFPTA since 2001 and this is his second term as an IFPTA Director.

Magnus Svensson, President

Magnus Svensson

In 1993, Magnus Svensson started his career as logistics consultant for SCA's industries in the Sundsvall region, later he worked as process engineer during a period.

In 1996, Magnus was offered the position as Vice President for SCA Transforest Marine Transportation Department. In 1997, he was pro-moted to Executive Vice President and in 2001 the responsibility changed to handle business development for the Transforest Group, including the Interforest Terminals.

In 2004 he was promoted to President of SCA Transforest. In this function, Magnus also holds several board positions in transport, port and stevedoring companies.

Magnus holds a Master of Science degree in Industrial and Management Engineering.

He has been a member IFPTA since 1997 and this is his second term as an IFPTA Director.




John Swingler, President

John Swingler

John Swingler has been in the forest product industry for over two decades. His first few years in the industry were spent working at a large South African paper merchant. Since then he has spent 19 years working at Sappi, with responsibilities in export sales and export logistics, both in Sappi’s South African and North America operations. The nature of Sappi’s global sales and manufac- turing operations, coupled with product mix has provided him with ample experience in the forest product transportation business.

Currently he is responsible for all the export logistics from Sappi’s North American operations as well the import and distribution in the USA of South African manufactured pulp. He is also a member of the Global Freight Committee, which is responsible for coordinating the global freight strategy for the Sappi Group. He has been a member of the IFPTA for many years and has actively participated in the biennial Transport Symposiums.

John has a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. He is married to Kelly and has three children.

He has been a member of IFPTA since 1995. This is his first term as an IFPTA Director.

George Hudson

George Hudson

George Hudson entered the port industry 40 years ago, most of which has been involved with the forest products sector. He joined the Mersey Docks & Harbour Company, the second largest ports’ group in the UK, in early 1999 as UK Business Development Manager for the group. As well as its port operations of Liverpool & Heysham, in the north of England, it also owned the Medway Ports of Chatham and Sheerness in Southern England. In September 2005 the Mersey Docks Group was bought by Peel Holdings and is now part of Peel Ports Ltd. Also included within Peel Ports is the Manchester Ship Canal and Clydeport.

Before joining the Mersey Docks Group he spent 30 years in the Port of London, at Tilbury, active in the forest products sector since the late 1960’s, when he joined Canadian Transport, a subsidiary of MacMillan Bloedel. Opening in 1967, Canadian Transport Terminals operated one of the first and most innovative purpose built deep-sea forest products terminals in the UK, handling all types of forest products produced by MacMillan Bloedel. In the early 1990s he joined the commercial department of the Port of Tilbury where his main responsibility was for forest products, until leaving to join Mersey Docks.

Based in Southern England his responsibilities now include not only forest products but also all other types of business development opportunities for the Peel Ports Group.

George has been a member of IFPTA since 1991. This is his first term as an IFPTA Director.

Aernaut Maijer

Spliethoff
Amsterdam, Netherlands

Aernaut Maijer

Since 1987, Aeranut Maijer has worked with the Dutch ship owner Spliethoff in Amsterdam. During his first four years with Spliethoff, Aernaut held positions in the Short Sea Chartering and Baltic departments before moving to the North and South America department. During this time, he spent one year in Finland working as a trainee/supercargo to get acquainted with that side of the forest products industry.

His current responsibilities are focused on the logistics of export of forest products from USA and Canada. This includes monitoring all operations and daily reports to clients as part of the after-sales support.

Aernaut has been a member of IFPTA since 2005. This is his first term as an IFPTA Director.
