SCA Logistics’ New Crane Lifts Service at Terminal in Sundsvall, Sweden

April 25, 2025 - SCA Logistics terminal in Sundsvall has invested in a new folding jib crane — a Mantsinen 200, which improves the terminal’s safety and efficiency.

“We already have a crane of the same model and now that we have two, we can load larger ships more efficiently,” says Tommy Berglund, department manager for the operational side.

Increased Security

The new crane also means that safety and the working environment are improved. The crane has, among other things, a safety system that means that there is no risk of implements, such as a beam, colliding with the cab. In addition, the crane warns of heavy loads, so that the crane operator can work efficiently and safely. There are also new functions that allow you to manage settings for different implements via a computer in the driver's cab.

Jonny Strömståhl, department manager for warehouse and planning, explained, “Different tools require different pressures on the hydraulic oil and on older cranes you need to make manual adjustments to the pressure reducing valves on the unit. Now you can do it with a few keystrokes on the computer. The working environment in the cab is also generally better.”

Smoother Maintenance

Another advantage of the investment is that it will be easier to plan the maintenance of the cranes.

“Now we can have a crane on service and still load and unload larger ships. This means it will be easier to maintain the service schedule, which is important for the equipment to last as long as possible,” Strömståhl noted.

More Free-Hanging Units

The crane's unit is a Stevenel brand and can lift six units of pulp bales, or twelve tons, in one lift. The unit itself weighs approximately four tons.

“It is a new type of pulp aggregate that is more free-hanging and we therefore expect it to withstand impacts well,” Strömståhl said.

Equipped for the Future

In recent years, SCA has invested nearly SEK 460 million at the terminal in Sundsvall. The investment includes a new container port and new areas for cargo handling.

“The new crane is another step towards increasing our productivity and service level. We are well equipped to handle the increased freight volumes in our region,” Strömståhl concluded.

With headquarters in Sundsvall, Sweden, SCA offers packaging paper, pulp, wood products, renewable energy, services for forest owners and efficient transport solutions.
